Building and finding inclusive workplaces

We offer a sneak peak into the wealth of tools available on the AMBA Career Development Centre for members to focus on building value and inclusion in their workplaces

We all want to work somewhere where we can be ourselves and feel valued and included. Similarly, employers want to create a working environment in which their staff can be as productive as possible, and fostering inclusion plays an important role in achieving this: the more included we feel at work, the better we perform.

To get the most out of your team as a manager, it’s key that you understand the importance of fostering inclusion. The videos by Abadesi Osunsade, an expert on career advancement, and which can be found on AMBA’s Career Development Centre, explain the key role fostering inclusion plays in staff productivity and retention as well as company growth. The videos also tackle the different ways in which managers can foster inclusion at work, from doing their research on diversity to becoming an ally.

The key to fostering inclusion is being mindful of the fact that everyone has their own opinions and experiences and making sure they are all equally supported at work. Our ‘Culture & Diversity’ topic in the e-learning hub contains advice on how managers and employees alike can manage diversity at work and contribute to an inclusive workplace, with tips on Managing multicultural teams, how to minimise a language barrier and how to improve your intercultural skills.

Our videos on ADHD by career coach Alex Smith give employees with ADHD the tools to manage ADHD at work as well as explaining to managers what they can do to support staff with ADHD.

It’s important to recognise that there are certain things people are reluctant to share with others in the workplace. In fact, some people struggle to be completely themselves at work, perhaps because they’re afraid of being judged.

Our learning course Being your true self at work explores the key things people tend to hide at work and why, as well as providing them with steps they can take to manage this, such as finding a support system at work or having a conversation with their manager.

Finally, our ‘Culture & Diversity’ topic includes advice for job seekers, helping them to find companies whose cultures align with their values, preferences and needs. For example, we share our 8 tips to investigate the culture of an employer, explain how to find LGBTQ-friendly employers and look at the different types of Disability Confident badges that exist and what companies need to do to get them.

Creating an inclusive workplace is ultimately a group effort, requiring active policy-making from a company level, encouragement on a managerial level and enforcement from all staff. So, whatever your position in a company, consider what you can do to contribute to building a working environment in which everyone feels supported, included and happy.

If you are an AMBA member, it’s easy to access all these resources on our exclusive Career Development Centre. Simply log in or register on our web portal, and click ‘Career Development Centre’ at the top of the menu on the left hand side of the members’ platform home page. From there you will be automatically signed in, and all you have to do is search for the course you need.
